Led by Dr. Lucia Covington, DMD, OMFS, our team offers sedation for everything from simple extractions to complex surgical procedures. Whether you’ve had a bad dental experience in the past, struggle with a gag reflex, or simply want to be more comfortable — we’re here to help.

Sedation Dentistry

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves using medication, anesthesia, or both to help patients feel calm and comfortable during oral surgery or dental treatment.

*We do not sedate children under the age of 13. Nitrous oxide may be offered as an alternative.

Depending on your level of anxiety and the procedure being performed, sedation may be:

  • Light (you’re awake but relaxed)
  • Moderate (you may fall asleep but can be easily awakened)
  • Deep (you’re asleep and monitored throughout)

As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Covington has advanced training in sedation and anesthesia — allowing us to provide in-office sedation safely and effectively.

Who Can Benefit from Sedation?

Sedation is ideal for patients who:

  • Have moderate to severe dental anxiety
  • Struggle with sensitive gag reflexes
  • Are undergoing long or complex procedures
  • Have had past traumatic dental experiences
  • Are hypersensitive to smells, sounds, or lights
  • Have difficulty sitting still due to physical or emotional conditions
  • Require multiple extractions or full-mouth procedures
  • Need oral surgery but are afraid of needles, drills, or discomfort

We also offer sedation for children and adolescents when appropriate, especially for those undergoing extractions, trauma care, or with special needs.

Types of Sedation We Offer

Every treatment begins with a comprehensive consultation, including digital X-rays and 3D imaging to assess your bone structure and oral health. If your jawbone is too soft or thin, a bone graft may be recommended to create a stable foundation for the implant.

1. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

A safe, fast-acting gas inhaled through a small mask. Nitrous helps patients relax while staying awake and aware. It wears off quickly and has no lingering effects, so you can resume normal activity after your visit.

2. IV Conscious Sedation

Delivered through a small vein in your arm or hand, IV sedation induces a deep state of relaxation. You may be drowsy, fall asleep, or have no memory of the procedure. This option is perfect for longer treatments or patients with high anxiety.

3. Local Anesthesia

Used with or without sedation, a local anesthetic is injected directly into the treatment area to block pain. You’ll remain awake and fully alert, but won’t feel any discomfort.

During your consultation, Dr. Covington will help determine which option is safest and most effective for your procedure and comfort level.
