What is IPL?
Intense pulsed light (IPL) refers to advanced laser technology that delivers light energy in short pulses that can penetrate deep into the skin. IPLs are different from other lasers because they use a broad range of wavelengths, while most lasers operate on just one wavelength.
Each differently colored pigment absorbs a different wavelength, so the IPL can treat multiple skin discolorations with one treatment. Your skin doesn’t absorb the light energy, however, so treatment doesn’t harm the surrounding tissues.
As the targeted pigment absorbs the pulsed light, it’s heated to a temperature that makes the pigment break down. As your body gradually removes the cellular waste, the problem areas disappear permanently.
The Icon IPL is also equipped with the Skintel™ Melanin Reader™, which ensures the best setting for determining the pigment’s density.
Which skin conditions are treated with the Icon IPL laser?
IPL treatments, called photofacials, target unwanted pigmentation and redness, rejuvenating your skin by eliminating:
- Age spots
- Enlarged pores
- Spider veins and reticular veins
- Non-cancerous brown spots
- Redness from broken capillaries
Besides treating skin discolorations, the Icon™ IPL delivers another benefit. Heat from IPL treatment also stimulates collagen production. As your skin sheds old cells and new collagen-rich cells replace the upper layer, your fresh skin is stronger and tighter with improved tone.
What should you expect during photofacial treatment with the Icon IPL?
You can expect your session to last about 30-60 minutes, depending on the treatment area. Most patients tolerate the sensation produced by the IPL, but Dr. Covington can apply numbing or cooling gel if needed.
Your skin may turn slightly red in the treated area for a few days, but you can get back to your normal activities as soon as your session is over. If Dr. Covington is treating freckles or age spots, they’ll appear darker for a short time, and the treated area may develop a crust that lasts about 10 days.
You’ll see optimal results within a few weeks when healing is complete, and the treated discolorations dissipate completely.
